Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 to 70 years old who are reasonably active and able to carry out daily activities (as measured by a standard health scale called the ECOG score of 0–2)
  • People with a thyroid nodule measuring between 11 and 40 mm, as seen on ultrasound, where a needle biopsy or surgical tissue sample has confirmed the diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer
  • People whose cancer appears to be contained within the thyroid, with no signs of spread to nearby lymph nodes on ultrasound, and no sign of the cancer growing beyond the thyroid gland before or during surgery
  • People who are in generally good health with no serious problems affecting major organs such as the blood, liver, kidneys, heart, or lungs, and who have no history of other head or neck cancers, neck radiation treatment, or major neck surgery
  • People who are willing and able to attend study visits and who have read, understood, and signed a consent form before any trial procedures begin

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with a history of cancer in other parts of the body (past or current), except for certain easily treatable skin cancers or early-stage cervical cancer
  • People whose thyroid tumour is larger than 40 mm or 10 mm or smaller, or where there are signs that the cancer has grown beyond the thyroid gland (either before or during surgery)
  • People who have cancerous or suspicious lymph nodes in the neck detected by ultrasound before surgery, or cancerous lymph nodes discovered and confirmed during surgery
  • People whose biopsy did not confirm papillary thyroid cancer, or whose cancer is a higher-risk subtype of papillary thyroid cancer
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People who have taken part in another treatment clinical trial within the four months before joining this study
