Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who developed a new episode of depression within 3 months after having a mild or moderate case of COVID-19, where the depression has been confirmed using a formal structured interview tool (confirm with trial site for how COVID-19 diagnosis is determined)
- People aged 18 to 75
- People who are in generally good physical health with no active medical conditions, other than migraine or long COVID (based on self-report)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have used antidepressant medications in the past month (or the past 6 weeks for the specific antidepressant fluoxetine)
- People who have used stimulant medications that affect brain chemistry (dopamine) in the past month
- People who have used antipsychotic medications in the past month
- People with a history of neurological (brain or nervous system) conditions, except for migraine or long COVID
- People who have used any medications, herbal products, or natural health products that affect the brain or nervous system in the past 2 weeks
- People who have smoked cigarettes in the past 2 months
- People with a lifetime diagnosis of a severe substance or alcohol use disorder, or a mild to moderate substance or alcohol use disorder in the past 2 years
- People who have used recreational drugs, including marijuana, in the past 2 months
- People whose urine drug or cotinine (a marker of tobacco use) test comes back positive at any point during the study
- People who had psychotic symptoms related to conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or similar conditions before their COVID-19 illness
- People who are currently pregnant or test positive for pregnancy at any point during the study (female participants up to age 65 will be given a urine pregnancy test before each scan)
- People who are currently breastfeeding (for female participants)
- People with blood clotting disorders or who are currently taking blood-thinning medication
- People who experience claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces)
- People who weigh over 400 lbs or are taller than 7 feet (due to scanner and equipment size limits)
- People who have metal implants, metal objects, or electrical devices in their body that are not safe for MRI scanning
- People who have had a severe allergic reaction to alcohol
