Who might be able to join this trial:

• People aged 18 to 70 years old who are in reasonably good general health (as measured by a performance scale called ECOG, scored 0–2)
• People who have a thyroid nodule on one side of the thyroid only, measuring no more than 4.0 cm across, confirmed by ultrasound
• People whose thyroid cancer has been confirmed as papillary thyroid carcinoma (a specific type of thyroid cancer) either before or during surgery
• People who are planned to have only one lobe of the thyroid removed (called a thyroid lobectomy)
• People where the cancer has not spread to nearby lymph nodes in a clinically significant way, has not grown outside the thyroid gland, and where any tiny lymph node involvement (smaller than 0.2 cm) involves no more than 5 nodes
• People with no serious problems with major organs such as the blood, liver, kidneys, heart, or lungs
• People with no history of other cancers in the head or neck area, no previous radiation to the neck, and no history of major neck surgery (minor skin procedures are generally not counted)
• People who are willing and able to complete the treatment, attend follow-up appointments, and sign a consent form

Who may not be able to join:

• People with a history of cancer in another part of the body (either in the past or at the same time), with the exception of certain easily treated skin cancers and a specific non-invasive cervical condition
• People whose ultrasound shows suspicious nodules on the opposite side of the thyroid, where a needle biopsy result is unclear or uncertain about whether the nodule is benign or cancerous (certain biopsy grading categories)
• People where lymph nodes are found to contain cancer spread, either confirmed before surgery or discovered during surgery
• People whose biopsy or surgical sample suggests a type of thyroid cancer other than standard papillary thyroid carcinoma — for example, follicular, medullary, poorly differentiated, undifferentiated, or a higher-risk form called "tall cell" papillary carcinoma
• People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
• People with a history of drug misuse or substance abuse in the past year
• People who have taken part in another clinical trial within the 4 weeks before enrolling
• People who are unwilling or unable to keep the remaining thyroid lobe in place, or who cannot follow through with thyroid hormone replacement treatment after surgery
• People whom the trial investigators consider unsuitable for the trial for other reasons, or who are unlikely to be able to complete the study (confirm with trial site)
