Who might be able to join this trial:
- The participant's kidney specialist and/or regular doctor agrees that the person may take part in the trial
- People who are considered "pre-frail" based on a walking speed test (taking more than 6 seconds to walk 15 feet), OR who answer "yes" to at least one of the following questions: having difficulty walking about a mile (5–6 blocks) for health or physical reasons; having changed the way they walk half a mile (5–6 blocks) due to health problems; having difficulty climbing one flight of stairs (10 steps) for health or physical reasons; or having changed the way they climb one flight of stairs due to health problems
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had a heart attack or unstable chest pain within the past six months
- People who have had an uncontrolled irregular heart rhythm within the past six months
- People whose blood pressure has been very high (top number above 180 and/or bottom number above 110) on more than one occasion in the past six months
- People who have had a stroke or a brief stroke-like episode (sometimes called a "mini-stroke") within the past six months
- People who have had an abnormal heart stress test within the past year
- People with a low red blood cell level (hemoglobin of 10 g/dL or less)
- People with the most severe stage of heart failure (Class IV)
- People who experience shortness of breath or chest pain while at rest
- People who rely on a wheelchair to get around
- People who live permanently in a nursing home or long-term care facility
- People with a terminal illness or a condition that would qualify them for hospice care
- People who plan to move away from the Middle Tennessee area within the next year
- People who have major surgery planned in the next six months
- People who are blind
- People who are currently attending physical therapy or a structured exercise program
- People who are expected to start dialysis or receive a kidney transplant within the next three months
- People who do not speak English
- People with severe memory or thinking difficulties
