Who might be able to join this trial:

• People aged 18 or older.
• People (or their legal representative) who are willing and able to sign a consent form before any study activities begin.

Who may not be able to join:

• People with a history of cancer of the stomach or the area where the stomach meets the esophagus.
• People who already had severe difficulty swallowing before this trial.
• People with a history of severe liver disease, or a condition called systemic lupus erythematosus (an immune system disorder) that was severe or rapidly worsening.
• People who have a condition involving inflammation of the kidneys called interstitial nephritis.
• People with a history of peptic ulcer disease (sores in the stomach or digestive tract lining).
• People with a history of bleeding in the upper digestive tract.
• People who have had radiation treatment to the chest area within the 2 years before joining the trial.
• People with a known or suspected allergy, or a previous bad reaction, to a group of medications called proton pump inhibitors (medicines commonly used to reduce stomach acid).
• People currently taking certain medications — including clopidogrel, nelfinavir, rilpivirine, methotrexate, rifampin, digoxin, tacrolimus, or phenytoin — because these may interact with a study medication called esomeprazole.
• People who are not receiving chemotherapy and radiation at the same time, or whose expected radiation dose to the esophagus falls below the required level.
