Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who speak Cantonese, Mandarin, or English and are of Chinese background
- People aged between 18 and 69 years old
- People who have a larger-than-recommended waist size (90 cm or more for men, 80 cm or more for women) and a body mass index (BMI) of 23 or higher, which is considered overweight by Hong Kong government standards
- People who have been diagnosed with a liver condition called NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease), where more than 5% of the liver contains fat, confirmed by a specific type of scan called MR spectroscopy
- People who are physically able to take part in the exercise program required by the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have been doing regular exercise (more than 3 sessions per week, each longer than 60 minutes, at moderate intensity) in the past 6 months
- People with a history of heart disease, long-term lung or kidney disease, heart failure, cancer, or any liver disease other than NAFLD
- People with a physical condition that prevents them from exercising, such as loss of a limb
- People whose ability to move around is limited by a long-term condition, such as severe arthritis, a neurological condition, a muscle or bone condition, or an autoimmune disease
- People who smoke daily
- People who have drunk more than a certain amount of alcohol every day in the past year (20 grams or more per day for men, 10 grams or more per day for women)
- People who are taking certain medications — such as tamoxifen or estrogen — that are known to cause fat to build up in the liver
- People who have had weight-loss surgery or a dietitian-supervised diet program in the past 6 months, or who are currently undergoing one (for example, gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, or gastric band surgery)
