Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been diagnosed with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma (a specific type of cancer) in one of these areas: the oropharynx (back of the throat), hypopharynx (lower throat), oral cavity (mouth), or larynx (voice box), confirmed by a tissue or cell sample.
  • People whose cancer has not spread to other parts of the body, and has been classified as Stage III, Stage IVA, or Stage IVB according to a standard cancer staging system (the 8th edition AJCC system).
  • People who have already completed a full course of combined chemotherapy and radiation treatment (given together) aimed at curing the cancer, before entering the trial.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose head and neck cancer started in a different location than those listed above — for example, the nasopharynx (upper throat behind the nose) or salivary glands — or whose cancer type is not squamous cell carcinoma, or where the original location of the cancer is unknown.
  • People who have more than one primary (original) cancer tumour.
  • People whose cancer was surgically removed before receiving the combined chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
  • People whose cancer has already come back (recurred) by the time of the screening assessment.
  • People who received radiation treatment on its own (without chemotherapy) as their main treatment for this cancer.
