Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with PTSD:

• You can be male or female
• You are right-handed
• You are between 18 and 64 years old
• You have a current diagnosis of PTSD that resulted from a experience involving interpersonal violence (such as physical or sexual assault)

For people who have experienced trauma but do NOT have PTSD:

• You can be male or female
• You are right-handed
• You are between 18 and 64 years old
• You have experienced interpersonal violence (such as physical or sexual assault)

Who may not be able to join:

• You currently have a substance use disorder (not including alcohol, nicotine, or cannabis)
• You are currently having serious thoughts of suicide
• You have a history of bipolar disorder or a psychotic disorder
• Your psychiatric medications have been changed or a new one added in the last 4 weeks (or 6 weeks if you take fluoxetine/Prozac)
• You take certain medications that can affect blood flow in the brain in ways that interfere with MRI scanning (confirm with trial site)
• You have a history of neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, or seizures
• You have ever lost consciousness for more than 10 minutes
• You have an intellectual disability (IQ below 70)
• You have a developmental disorder
• You have anything in or on your body that is not safe inside an MRI scanner, such as metal implants, electronic devices, surgical implants, or shrapnel
• You experience claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or cannot lie still in a small space
• You have a physical disability that would prevent you from completing study tasks, such as blindness or deafness
• You have tested positive for pregnancy
• You have a cochlear implant (a device implanted in the ear)
• You have an implanted brain or nerve stimulation device
• You are pregnant, appear unable to give informed consent, are currently in prison, are unable to read the consent forms, or have a personal relationship with someone on the research team (such as a friend, family member, or partner)
• You have a history of chest pain during physical activity
• A doctor has told you that a bone, joint, heart, or other medical condition could be made worse by physical activity
• You have asthma
• Your answers to a standard exercise safety questionnaire (called the PAR-Q) suggest it may not be safe for you to do aerobic exercise without a doctor's approval — though you may still be eligible if you can provide a doctor's note confirming it is safe for you to participate
• You have had a heart procedure (coronary intervention) or heart attack in the last 6 weeks
• You have had an unstable heart rhythm or shocks from an implanted heart device in the last 3 months
• The lead researcher believes that any other condition you have could put you at risk
• You have non-removable dental hardware such as braces or permanent retainers that could interfere with MRI image quality — the lead researcher will decide on a case-by-case basis (note: fillings, crowns, and gold or silver teeth are generally fine)
• Any other condition, medication, or implant that the lead researcher believes would reduce the quality of MRI images
