Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People diagnosed with a specific stage of throat cancer (called hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, at stage T2 or T3) located in particular areas of the lower throat known as the piriform sinus or the back wall of the hypopharynx.
  • People where the opposite side of the voice box is still able to move normally.
  • People who are generally well enough to carry out daily activities with little or no difficulty, based on a standard health scoring system (a score of 0 or 1 on the ECOG scale).
  • People who have not previously received radiation therapy.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose cancer has grown into a specific cartilage in the throat (the cricoid cartilage) in a way that means the voice box cannot be preserved during surgery.
  • People with reduced lung function, where a specific breathing test result (FEV1/FVC) is below 50%.
  • People whose cancer in the neck cannot be surgically removed, such as when it has grown around a major blood vessel (the carotid artery), spread into the tissue at the back of the throat (prevertebral fascia), or extended into the chest area (mediastinum).
  • People with heart problems serious enough that general anaesthesia would not be safe.
  • People whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body (distant metastasis).
