Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • You must be willing and able to give your consent to participate in the trial
  • You must have been diagnosed (confirmed through a lab test of tissue or cells) with head and neck squamous cell cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, cannot be removed by surgery, or has come back and cannot be treated with local therapies
  • You must be about to start a first-line treatment using immunotherapy drugs that target PD-1 or PD-L1 (either alone or in combination with other treatments)
  • You must be able to provide a tumor tissue sample that reflects your current disease, following the trial's laboratory guidelines

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose head and neck cancer is not the squamous cell type — for example, cancers of the nasopharynx or salivary glands
  • People whose cancer came back within 6 months of completing a first course of chemotherapy and/or chemo-radiation treatment
  • People whose tumor tests negative for a protein called PD-L1 (with a score called CPS below 1)
  • People who have had another active, serious cancer within the last 2 years — though some exceptions may apply, such as certain stable or very early-stage cancers including stable prostate cancer under monitoring, early cervical cancer, early breast cancer, or a limited type of skin cancer (confirm with trial site)
  • People who are unwilling or unable to follow the study procedures, such as having extra blood samples taken during the trial
