Who might be able to join this trial:

• The child and their parent or guardian must agree to take part, with the child giving their assent and the parent giving formal consent
• The child must be between 7 and 12 years old and have a body weight classified as overweight or obese (at or above the 85th percentile for BMI)
• The child must score highly on a measure of food responsiveness — specifically, a score of 3.8 or higher on a standard questionnaire about how strongly a child is drawn to food
• A parent or caregiver who is responsible for preparing the family's food must be willing to take part and must be able to read, speak, and understand English at roughly a primary school level
• The whole family must be willing to attend all appointments and sessions, agree to be randomly assigned to a treatment group, and take part in all parts of the study
• If the child takes any medication that can affect body weight, they must have been on a stable dose of that medication for at least 3 months
• The child must be able to take part in physical activity throughout the study, and the parent must be able to either join the child in physical activity or arrange opportunities for the child to do the recommended activities

Who may not be able to join:

• Children who have an active, serious mental health condition, such as current suicidal thoughts, a recent psychiatric hospitalisation, psychosis, or bulimia nervosa
• Children who have a serious long-term physical health condition (for example, cystic fibrosis or type 1 diabetes) where a doctor would normally need to directly oversee any changes to diet or exercise
• Children who are currently taking medication specifically for weight loss
• Parents or caregivers who have an active, serious mental health condition, such as current suicidal thoughts, a recent psychiatric hospitalisation, psychosis, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, or a moderate to severe alcohol or substance use disorder
• Families where a close relative or someone living in the household has a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa
• Children or parents whose medical or psychological situation could make it unsafe or very difficult to follow the study plan (confirm with trial site)
