Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with PTSD:

  • You are a man or woman between the ages of 18 and 50
  • You have been officially diagnosed with PTSD according to standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5)
  • Your PTSD is connected to a combat-based experience, such as being injured in combat or witnessing the death of a fellow soldier
  • You score at least 18 on a scale measuring combat experiences (confirm with trial site)
  • You score 3 or more on a short PTSD screening questionnaire used in primary care (confirm with trial site)
  • You may still be eligible if you have other mental health conditions such as anxiety or ADHD

For healthy volunteers (no PTSD):

  • You are a man or woman between the ages of 18 and 50

Who may not be able to join:

For people with PTSD:

  • You have received treatment for PTSD, substance use, or any mental health concern in the past 6 months
  • It has been 10 or more years since your combat trauma occurred
  • You are currently under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • You have a severe level of substance dependence (confirm with trial site)
  • You have a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • You have a current or past diagnosis of a psychotic disorder, or are currently experiencing psychotic symptoms
  • You currently have Bipolar I Disorder
  • You have dementia
  • You have a serious neurological or medical condition, such as stroke, epilepsy, cancer, Lupus, or HIV
  • You have had a traumatic brain injury

For healthy volunteers:

  • You have any metal implants in your body, such as a pacemaker, metal braces, retainers, tattoos or permanent makeup containing metal, or medicated skin patches that cannot be removed
  • You have a serious neurological or medical condition, such as stroke, epilepsy, cancer, Lupus, or HIV
  • You have ever been diagnosed with PTSD, Tourette's Syndrome, Bipolar Disorder, Substance Dependence, an Eating Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, a psychotic disorder, or Acute Stress Disorder
  • You have ever experienced a life-threatening event involving physical attack, guns, fire, or explosion
  • You have had a traumatic brain injury
  • You were born prematurely, before 37 weeks of pregnancy
  • You experience claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces)
  • You have had an anxiety disorder, mood disorder, substance use disorder, or adjustment disorder in the past 2 years
  • You have received treatment for any mental health concern in the past 2 years
  • You are currently pregnant
