Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older.
- People who are able and willing to give informed consent, or who have a designated person (such as a family member or legal representative) who can give consent on their behalf.
- People whose thyroid nodule is not causing symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, or is not visibly noticeable or bothersome.
- People whose thyroid nodule has been rated as TI-RADS 4 or 5 on imaging — a scoring system used by doctors to assess the risk level of thyroid nodules (confirm with trial site if unsure of your rating).
- People whose thyroid nodule measures 2 centimetres or smaller at its widest point.
- People who are already being considered for a biopsy (a procedure to sample tissue from the nodule).
- People with a past history of a specific type of thyroid cancer called papillary thyroid cancer.
- For the interview/recording portion of the study: people who are willing to have conversations audio-recorded and/or to be interviewed by the research team.
Who may not be able to join:
- Adults who are not able to give informed consent and do not have a surrogate available to do so.
- People for whom a biopsy is not being considered by their doctor.
- People with a history of any type of thyroid cancer other than papillary thyroid cancer.
- People who have had radiation treatment to the neck at any point.
- People who no longer have a thyroid gland (due to surgical removal) or who only have thyroid tissue located at the base of the tongue rather than in the normal position in the neck.
- People whose ultrasound scan shows that the nodule is growing into the airway, pressing on or growing into a nearby nerve called the recurrent laryngeal nerve, or extending beyond the thyroid gland.
- People who have cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes in the neck (confirmed by biopsy if the ultrasound raises concern) or to other parts of the body.
- People who have already had a biopsy performed on the specific nodule being considered for this study.
- For the interview/recording portion of the study: people who are not willing to have conversations audio-recorded or to be interviewed by the research team.
- For staff participants: staff members who are not willing to have recruitment conversations recorded or to participate in interviews with the research team.
