Who might be able to join this trial:

  • The child's parent or caregiver must be willing to give their child only whole milk or only 1% milk (assigned randomly) for one year

  • Children who are younger than 23 months or older than 48 months old at the time of recruitment
  • Children who have a medical condition or take medication that affects their growth, daily eating, or heart and metabolic health (such as growth hormone deficiency, a metabolic disorder, syndromic obesity, or familial high cholesterol) (confirm with trial site)
  • Children whose weight relative to their length or height falls below the 2nd percentile on growth charts
  • Children who have lactose intolerance, a milk allergy, or other dietary restrictions (such as a vegan diet) that would prevent them from consuming dairy or would significantly limit what they can eat
  • Children who live across more than one household, such as in shared care arrangements between separated parents
  • Children who are not covered by either public or private health insurance
  • If two children in the same household are otherwise eligible, only one will be selected to participate (chosen at random)
