Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 65 years old.
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part in the study.
- You have been diagnosed with episodic migraine (with or without aura) according to recognised international guidelines.
- You have had between 4 and 14 migraine attacks per month over the last 3 months, and this is confirmed by keeping a headache diary before the study begins.
- Your migraines started at least one year before joining the study.
- Your migraines first began before you were 50 years old.
- You are not currently using any other preventive (prophylactic) migraine medications, and agree not to use them during the study.
- If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you are not currently pregnant, not planning to become pregnant during the study, and are using highly effective contraception.
Who may not be able to join:
- You experience frequent headaches between migraines that are hard to tell apart from migraine attacks.
- You have chronic migraine, chronic tension-type headache, headaches caused by overusing pain medication, or any headache occurring on 15 or more days per month.
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, unable to use contraception, or currently breastfeeding.
- You have signs or a history of liver problems such as bile flow issues, or reduced liver or kidney function.
- You have serious other health conditions or frailty that could affect your life expectancy or likelihood of needing hospital care (the trial doctor will assess this).
- You are allergic or sensitive to statins, or have taken statins before.
- You have a history of a condition causing sudden severe swelling under the skin (angioedema) (confirm with trial site).
- You have used preventive migraine medication within the last 4 weeks, or have had botulinum toxin (Botox) injections for migraine within the last 16 weeks.
- You are currently taking antiviral medication to treat hepatitis C.
- You have a significant mental health condition.
- You have already tried 3 or more different preventive migraine medications in the last 10 years.
- You currently need to reduce or stop overusing acute migraine medications such as triptans or opioids.
- No acute migraine medication has ever worked for you.
- You are dependent on alcohol or illegal drugs.
- You are unable to understand or follow the study procedures for the full duration of the trial.
- You are currently being treated for an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).
- You have lactose intolerance.
