Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are at least 18 years old.
- People who have been diagnosed (confirmed by tissue or cell testing) with a specific type of head and neck cancer — in the throat (oropharynx), lower throat (hypopharynx), voice box (larynx), or mouth — that has not been treated before and has not spread to distant parts of the body, and where the planned treatment is radiation therapy (with or without chemotherapy) aimed at curing the cancer.
- People whose tumour meets a minimum size requirement: for a type called p16-positive oropharyngeal cancer, the tumour must be estimated at 30 cc or larger; for all other locations or p16-negative oropharyngeal cancer, the tumour must be estimated at 20 cc or larger (confirm with trial site on how this is measured).
- People whose treatment plan may include surgery after radiation — such as a salvage procedure or removal of lymph nodes in the neck — but not surgery before radiation; a small diagnostic procedure such as removal of a lymph node or tonsil for testing purposes does not prevent participation.
- People who are reasonably fit and able to carry out daily activities, as measured by a standard medical scale (WHO/ECOG performance status 0–2) (confirm with trial site).
- People who are able to understand the information about the trial and are willing to provide written consent to participate.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had radiation treatment to the head or neck area.
- People who have had, or currently have, another cancer — with some exceptions: straightforward skin cancers of a specific type (basal cell carcinoma, or early-stage squamous cell skin cancer with at least one year of follow-up), or any other cancer where the person has been cancer-free for at least three years.
- People who have two or more separate head and neck cancers diagnosed at the same time.
- People whose cancer is located in the nasopharynx (the upper part of the throat behind the nose).
- People whose cancer is located in the sinuses or nasal cavity.
- People who have another serious illness that is expected to significantly shorten life expectancy (less than three years).
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People with certain psychiatric conditions, addiction disorders, or other medical conditions that, in the opinion of the trial doctor, may affect their ability to follow the trial requirements.
