Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 20 and 60 years old
- You are scheduled to have a planned surgery to remove one lobe of your thyroid gland, along with the middle section (isthmus) and nearby lymph nodes in the central area of the neck
Who may not be able to join:
- You have had any previous surgery on your head or neck
- You have a history of problems with your speech or pronunciation system
- You have a history of polyps or nodules on your vocal cords
- You had an upper respiratory infection (such as a cold or throat infection) in the two weeks before surgery, or developed an infection after surgery
- You have a history of any neurological (brain or nerve) disorders
- You have any abnormalities in your throat
- You have existing damage to the structure or movement of your throat before surgery
- You already have voice or speech problems, noticeable hoarseness, or difficulty speaking before the surgery
- A camera examination of your throat (before or after surgery) shows that your vocal cords are not moving properly or that a small joint in your voice box is out of place
- You have a nerve-related condition that affects how your throat functions
- You are unable to participate in a voice self-assessment questionnaire (called the Voice Handicap Index) or a voice analysis test
