Who might be able to join this trial:

For adult caregivers (enrolling on behalf of a child):

• The caregiver speaks English.
• The caregiver has a child between 1 and 10 years old who has been diagnosed with sickle cell disease (any type) and has had hydroxyurea prescribed for at least 180 days before joining the trial.
• Caregivers who have more than one child that meets the criteria may only enroll once.

• The person is between 11 and 25 years of age at the time of enrollment.
• The person has been diagnosed with sickle cell disease (any type) and has had hydroxyurea prescribed for at least 180 days before joining the trial.

To be considered for the main part of the trial (randomization):

• The participant or caregiver must open the electronic medication monitoring device at home at least once during the initial run-in period.

Who may not be able to join:

• People who took part in a previous related study called the VDOT study (this applies to both young people and caregivers of younger children).
• People who are currently receiving more than one sickle cell disease treatment at the same time — for example, those also receiving regular blood transfusions or taking L-glutamine (this applies to both young people and caregivers of younger children).
