Who might be able to join this trial:
- Women of Caucasian background who have gone through menopause and live in the Emilia-Romagna region
- Women who reached menopause at age 45 or older
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have or have had cancer (tumours)
- People who do not live independently (for example, those in a care facility)
- People with serious long-term illnesses affecting major organs, or conditions affecting the parathyroid, thyroid, or adrenal glands, or conditions involving poor nutrient absorption from the gut, softening of the bones (osteomalacia), Paget's disease of bone, rheumatoid arthritis, or neurodegenerative diseases
- People who have been taking corticosteroids (such as steroid tablets), proton pump inhibitors (stomach acid medicines), or aromatase inhibitors continuously for more than 3 months
- People who have previously broken their hip or thigh bone (femur fracture)
- People who have a hip or knee replacement (prosthesis)
- For the fracture group only: People who have internal fixation devices (such as metal plates or screws) from a previous fracture
- For the fracture group only: People whose femur fracture was caused by a high-force event such as a car accident or serious fall from height
