Who might be able to join this trial:
- People of any gender between the ages of 24 and 65
- People who have been diagnosed with bipolar I or bipolar II disorder (as defined by standard psychiatric guidelines)
- People who are currently experiencing a depressive episode, confirmed by a standard mood rating scale
- People who are able to give informed consent and can provide up-to-date contact information, including the name of their current mental health provider
- People who have been on a stable medication routine for at least one month, which must include a mood-stabilizing medication
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are currently experiencing a manic or hypomanic episode, as measured by a standard rating scale
- People who have "rapid-cycling" bipolar disorder, meaning they have more than 4 mood episodes per year
- People who are currently having active thoughts of suicide with a plan or intention to act on them
- People who have had a substance use disorder in the past 6 months (though substance use disorders that are in remission may be allowed)
- People with a history of psychosis
- People with dementia or other significant neurological conditions, as measured by standard cognitive tests
- People with a physical illness or medical treatment that could interfere with taking part in the study
- People who cannot safely have an MRI or TMS (brain stimulation) procedure — for example, those with a pacemaker, metal implants, non-removable piercings, a history of seizures, or a history of head trauma
- People who have received certain types of brain stimulation therapy (such as TMS, tDCS, or electroconvulsive therapy) within the past 6 months
- People who are currently taking benzodiazepine medications (a type of sedative), as these can interfere with the treatment used in this study
- People who are currently pregnant
