Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 to 99 years old
- People whose overall health makes them a suitable candidate for both a heat/cold-based tumour destruction procedure (ablation) and surgery
- People with a tumour that started in the kidney (not one that spread from elsewhere)
- People whose kidney tumour measures 3 centimetres or smaller
- People whose tumour is at an early stage, meaning it has not visibly grown into nearby blood vessels or spread outside the kidney
- People whose tumour is located in a position that allows both ablation and surgical removal to be considered
- People who show no signs of cancer spread (metastasis) on imaging scans
- People who have had a biopsy confirming the tumour is cancerous
- People whose biopsy results show a tumour grade of ISUP I, II, or III (a measure of how abnormal the cancer cells look, with lower numbers generally indicating less aggressive cells)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have imaging scan results showing signs that the cancer has spread to other parts of the body
- People who have more than one kidney tumour present at the same time
- People whose biopsy shows an ISUP grade IV tumour or a particularly aggressive type of cell growth called sarcomatoid features
- People who have had another cancer that had spread (metastasised) within the past five years
- People who are not able to give informed consent to take part in the study
