Kidney Cancer
Plain English clinical trial information, updated daily from ClinicalTrials.gov and public government registries. Not medical advice.
How these figures are counted
- Trials on record is every trial tagged to this condition at any stage, except those withdrawn before starting or terminated early. Most are completed rather than ongoing, so this is a measure of research history, not of current activity. It is also smaller than the sitewide "trials tracked" figure, which does include withdrawn and terminated trials.
- Recruiting now counts only trials whose registry status is "Recruiting". Trials listed as not yet recruiting or enrolling by invitation are excluded, so this understates how many may open to new participants soon.
- Australian sites counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that list at least one Australian site. A site being listed does not mean it is currently enrolling, and Australian trials registered only on ANZCTR are not counted yet, so this understates local availability.
- Phase 3 trials counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that are at Phase 3.

Understanding Kidney Cancer
Kidney cancer, also called renal cancer, happens when cells in one or both kidneys start to grow in an uncontrolled way and form a tumour. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs sitting towards the back of your abdomen, and their main job is to filter waste from your blood and produce urine. The most common type of kidney cancer in adults is called renal cell carcinoma, though there are several other types. In many cases, kidney cancer is found by accident during a scan done for another reason, before a person has noticed any symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they can include blood in the urine, back or side pain, or a lump in the abdomen.
Kidney cancer is one of the more common cancers diagnosed in Australia. It affects more men than women, and the risk increases with age, with most people diagnosed being over 50. Around 4,000 Australians are diagnosed each year. Certain factors, such as smoking, obesity, and high blood pressure, are linked to a higher risk of developing the condition, though many people diagnosed have none of these risk factors.
Treatment depends on a number of things, including the size and location of the tumour, whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, and the overall health of the person diagnosed. For cancers that have not spread, surgery to remove part or all of the affected kidney is a common approach. When the cancer has spread or cannot be removed with surgery, other options such as targeted drug therapies, immunotherapy, or radiation may be considered. A team of specialists, often called a multidisciplinary team, will typically work together to discuss the most appropriate options for each individual.

These medicines are listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for the specific indications shown. Most patients pay only the standard co-payment, up to AU$25.00 per script (general) or AU$7.70 (concession or Safety Net) in 2026, with the Australian Government subsidising the rest.
