Who might be able to join this trial:

As a shift worker participant:

  • Works in the healthcare sector or an industrial setting
  • Is employed or self-employed
  • Is 21 years of age or older
  • Works at least 24 hours per week
  • Has been doing shift work for more than 3 years and is currently working night shifts
  • Works 4 or more rotating night shifts per month, where a night shift means working at least 3 hours between midnight and 5:00am, including at least 2 nights in a row per month

As a control (non-shift worker) participant:

  • Works in the healthcare sector or an industrial setting
  • Is employed or self-employed
  • Is 21 years of age or older
  • Works at least 24 hours per week
  • Has not done any night shift or rotating shift work in the past 5 years
  • Has no history of doing night shifts or rotating shift work for more than 5 years total

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are currently pregnant
  • People who are currently breastfeeding
  • People with a BMI of 40 or above
  • People currently undergoing treatment for a disease, such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy for cancer
  • People with certain ongoing chronic conditions, including kidney failure, active hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, heart attack history, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or cancer that is not in remission
  • People with immune system conditions, autoimmune or auto-inflammatory diseases (such as type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis), or who are currently experiencing a flare-up of conditions such as eczema, asthma, or hay fever
  • People who have had bariatric (weight-loss) surgery
  • People who have taken antibiotics in the past month
