Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are older than 75 years of age.
- People with a general health and activity level that falls within a certain range, meaning they are able to carry out some daily activities, even if limited (this is measured using a standard scale called the ECOG score of 0–2; confirm with trial site if unsure where someone falls on this scale).
- People who have been diagnosed with a type of lung cancer called non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), confirmed through a tissue or cell sample, at a stage that has not spread to distant parts of the body (stages IIb–IIIc).
- People whose cancer cannot be safely treated with surgery, or who have chosen not to have surgery.
- People whose blood counts, lung function, heart function, liver function, and kidney function all meet certain minimum levels as assessed by a doctor (confirm with trial site for specific values).
- People who are able and willing to give written informed consent to participate.
Who may not be able to join:
- People with squamous cell carcinoma (a specific type of non-small cell lung cancer) who have previously been treated with a drug called bevacizumab before receiving carbon ion radiotherapy.
- People who have another active cancer that has not been controlled.
- People whose radiation treatment plan cannot safely cover the tumour or adequately protect surrounding healthy tissue and organs.
- People who have previously had radiation therapy to the chest, or have had radioactive seeds implanted in the chest.
- People who have a cardiac pacemaker or certain metal implants inside their body that could be affected by high-energy radiation or could interfere with treatment planning.
- People who are HIV positive, are in an active phase of hepatitis virus infection requiring antiviral treatment but are unable to receive it due to other health conditions, or who have active syphilis.
- People with a history of mental illness that may prevent them from completing the treatment programme.
- People with serious other health conditions that could interfere with radiotherapy, including: active infections; unstable chest pain, heart failure, or a heart attack within the past 6 months; a flare-up of a lung condition requiring hospitalisation; severely weakened immune function; conditions that cause extreme sensitivity to radiation (such as ataxia telangiectasia); or other conditions a doctor considers incompatible with this type of treatment.
- People whom the treating doctor considers unsuitable for participation in the study for other reasons.
