Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are scheduled for a planned (non-emergency) robotic-assisted surgery on the upper part of the urinary tract at one of the hospitals taking part in this study
- You are willing to give your agreement to take part, both verbally and in writing, after being fully informed about the study
Who may not be able to join:
- You have been rated as being in very poor general health before surgery (known as ASA class IV or above — confirm with trial site if unsure what this means for you)
- You are under 18 years old, have been legally declared unable to make your own decisions, have a severe psychiatric illness, or are not able to understand the study information due to serious difficulties with vision, hearing, thinking, reading, or understanding Swedish
- You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- You are a woman who has not yet gone through menopause, has not had certain sterilisation procedures, and is not using a highly reliable form of contraception, or cannot provide a negative pregnancy test
- You are scheduled for emergency surgery
- The research team is not available at the time of your surgery
- You are having another major operation on a different organ at the same time
- Your anaesthetist has already planned to use spinal or epidural pain relief for your surgery
- You have medical reasons why spinal pain relief would not be safe for you, such as serious blood clotting problems, a severe heart valve condition, previous back surgery with metal rods, severe obesity, or severe curvature of the spine (confirm with trial site)
- You have medical reasons why a lidocaine drip (a type of local anaesthetic given through a vein) would not be safe for you, such as a known allergy to local anaesthetics, a muscle condition called myasthenia gravis, severe kidney problems, severe liver disease, or serious heart rhythm or heart function problems (confirm with trial site)
- You have already taken part in this trial before
