Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have recently been diagnosed with an early-stage skin melanoma that is no deeper than 1.0 mm into the skin, confirmed by a full surgical removal and laboratory analysis of the tissue.
  • People whose melanoma is in a location on the body where surgery to remove a 10 mm border of surrounding skin would have been the standard planned treatment.
  • People whose removed tissue showed that the edges around the melanoma were clear of cancer cells by at least 1.5 mm.
  • People who are 18 years of age or older at the time of agreeing to participate.
  • People who are able to understand and agree to the study procedures and are willing to attend follow-up appointments.
  • People who have a life expectancy of at least 5 years from the time of their melanoma diagnosis.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose melanoma was only partially removed before the full surgical removal (diagnostic excision) was done.
  • People whose melanoma was removed with more than 5 mm of surrounding skin during the initial diagnostic removal.
  • People whose melanoma is of a specific type called desmoplastic, lentigo maligna, or acral lentiginous melanoma.
  • People whose melanoma is located on a finger or toe where amputation would be required.
  • People who have had a previous or current melanoma anywhere on or in the body, at any stage.
  • People who have signs — found through physical examination, scans, or laboratory results — that the melanoma has spread to other areas of the body.
  • People who have had another type of cancer (solid tumour or blood cancer) within the past 5 years, except for common skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma.
  • People for whom additional radiation treatment to the melanoma site has been planned after surgery.
