Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 or older
- People who have been diagnosed with a brain tumor that requires or has required radiation treatment to the head (enrollment may happen during radiation treatment or up to 5 years after it has finished)
- People whose general health and ability to function meets a certain minimum level, as measured by two standard medical scoring tools (confirm with trial site)
- People whose medical team expects them to survive at least 6 months
- People who are willing and able to follow the study schedule, including attending all required visits and examinations
- People whose liver enzyme blood test results (ALT and AST) are within an accepted range, based on a blood test taken within the past 30 days (a slightly higher range may be accepted for people with pre-existing liver conditions — confirm with trial site)
- People who are not currently pregnant, confirmed by a negative pregnancy test taken within 8 days before joining (applies only to people who could become pregnant)
- People who are able to complete memory and thinking assessments and questionnaires, either on their own or with assistance
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a serious or uncontrolled illness or other condition that could affect their safety or ability to follow the study procedures
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people who are currently imprisoned, or people who are not able to understand what participation involves
- People who cannot swallow tablets, or who have a condition that may prevent their body from absorbing oral medication properly
- People who are already taking metformin (the study medication) and for whom it would not be safe to stop taking it if assigned to the control group
- People who have a known allergy or sensitivity to metformin
- People who are currently taking resveratrol, CoQ10, coconut oil or other medium-chain triglyceride supplements (such as Axona), or curcumin, and who are not willing to stop taking these before joining and for the full duration of the study
- People who are unable to read and speak English (note: English does not need to be the person's first language)
