Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 90 years, of any gender, who are able to give their consent to participate before any study procedures begin.
- People who are already on haemodialysis (a treatment that filters the blood using a machine) and need a new way to access their blood vessels for that treatment, or people with severe kidney failure who are preparing to start dialysis.
- People for whom the preferred treatment plan is a surgical procedure to create a connection between an artery and a vein in the forearm (known as an AVF), which is used to make blood vessel access easier during dialysis.
Who may not be able to join:
- People for whom creating an AVF would be medically unsafe or not recommended.
- People who have already had a failed AVF in the same arm being considered for the new surgery.
- People who cannot have an MRI scan, including those who are pregnant, have claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), have a heart pacemaker, or have other implants or devices that are not compatible with MRI.
- People who are currently receiving haemodialysis through a catheter (a tube inserted into a blood vessel) or a graft (an artificial connection between blood vessels).
- People who are currently receiving a different type of kidney treatment called peritoneal dialysis, which filters the blood through the abdomen.
- People whose life expectancy is estimated to be less than 2 years.
