Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are at least 18 years old and are presenting to the triage area of the MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) Acute Cancer Care Center (ACCC) for treatment
  • People who have advanced lung or gastrointestinal (gut/digestive) cancer that has come back or spread, and for which no curative treatment is available
  • People who are showing at least 2 of the following 3 concerning symptoms: difficulty breathing, confusion or changes in mental awareness, or a very low ability to carry out daily activities
  • People who are able to speak and write in English
  • People who are able to give their own consent to participate, or who have a legally authorised representative present who is able to give consent on their behalf

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are already enrolled in hospice care
  • People who are in a coma
  • People who have a severe intellectual disability
  • People who have a documented history of dementia in their medical records
  • People who have existing communication barriers, such as aphasia (difficulty using language) or deafness
  • People who are new to MD Anderson Cancer Center and do not already have established cancer care at that institution at the time of their visit
  • People aged 18 or older who are currently being cared for by a pediatrics (children's) medical team
  • People who are pregnant
  • People who are currently incarcerated
