  • You are a man or woman aged 60 or older
  • You have at least 5 but no more than 10 actinic keratoses (rough, scaly skin patches that can be pre-cancerous) on each forearm or wrist area
  • You have fair skin (the type that tends to burn easily in the sun rather than tan)
  • Women must have gone through menopause and must not be taking hormone replacement therapy pills or other systemic hormone treatments

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have more than 10 of these rough skin patches on an arm
  • Your skin patches are large or very thick (thicker than 3 mm, roughly the thickness of two stacked pennies)
  • You have a history of diabetes
  • You have a history of wounds that heal poorly or leave significant scars
  • You have large tattoos on the areas being studied that could get in the way
  • You have other serious health conditions or other skin diseases that could affect the study (confirm with trial site)
  • You have had certain skin treatments on your forearms or wrists within the last year, such as a medicated cream called Efudex or a light-based treatment called photodynamic therapy (PDT)
  • You are planning to move away from the area within the next 5 years
  • You have a known allergy to a numbing medication called xylocaine, if that medication would be needed for you during the study
