Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Adults aged 18 or older
  • People scheduled for head and neck cancer surgery (such as for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, larynx cancer, hypopharyngeal cancer, or other head and neck cancers — but not thyroid cancer), where the surgery is expected to last 2 hours or more

  • People with severely reduced heart function, including a heart pumping capacity below 30%, or heart failure rated at a severe level on a standard heart function scale (confirm with trial site)
  • People with a lung condition that means they cannot tolerate a standard breathing volume during mechanical ventilation
  • People with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm condition)
  • People who are unable to give their own informed consent to participate
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People requiring emergency surgery
