Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People scheduled for head and neck cancer surgery (such as for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, larynx cancer, hypopharyngeal cancer, or other head and neck cancers — but not thyroid cancer), where the surgery is expected to last 2 hours or more
- People who agree to have their blood pressure monitored through a small tube placed directly into an artery during surgery
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose overall health is rated at the most severe level on a standard anaesthesia risk scale (confirm with trial site)
- People having surgery aimed only at managing symptoms of a terminal (end-stage) tumour, rather than treating it
- People having laser surgery or keyhole (endoscopic) surgery on the larynx or throat
- People who had major chest or abdominal surgery within the past 30 days
- People who require ongoing dialysis or regular kidney replacement therapy
- People with severely reduced heart function, including a heart pumping capacity below 30%, or heart failure rated at a severe level on a standard heart function scale (confirm with trial site)
- People with a lung condition that means they cannot tolerate a standard breathing volume during mechanical ventilation
- People with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm condition)
- People who are unable to give their own informed consent to participate
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People requiring emergency surgery
