Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 65 years of age
- Men and women of any racial background
- People with a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 45 (a measure of weight relative to height that falls in the obese range)
- People with elevated or high blood pressure — either pre-hypertension (two or more blood pressure readings above 120/80 mmHg while seated) or hypertension (two or more readings above 130/80 mmHg while seated, or currently taking blood pressure-lowering medication)
- People who are able to understand and agree to participate in the study
- People who are fluent in written and spoken English
- People who have had a satisfactory health history review and physical examination at the trial site
Who may not be able to join:
- People aged 17 or younger, or 66 or older
- People currently taking more than two blood pressure-lowering medications
- People whose high blood pressure is caused by a specific underlying medical condition (such as certain hormonal or heart structure disorders) (confirm with trial site)
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Women who have used hormone replacement therapy within the past 6 months
- People who have difficulty making their own decisions or giving informed consent
- People who are currently incarcerated
- People with a current problem with alcohol or drug misuse
- People who currently smoke
- Highly trained competitive athletes
- People whose body weight has changed by more than 5% in the past 3 months
- People with a BMI above 45
- People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or whose fasting blood sugar is above a certain level, or who take diabetes medications
- People with a significant history of heart or blood vessel disease — for example, a heart attack within the past 6 months, chest pain conditions, certain heart rhythm problems, heart failure, blood clots, certain heart valve or muscle conditions, stroke, or mini-strokes
- People with a history or current diagnosis of immune system or blood disorders
- People with reduced liver function based on blood test results
- People with reduced kidney function based on blood test results
- People with anaemia (low red blood cell levels)
- People currently taking certain medications that affect the nervous system, such as some antidepressants or stimulants (confirm with trial site)
- People currently taking a class of medications known as phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (used for certain conditions including erectile dysfunction or pulmonary hypertension)
- People currently taking blood-thinning medications such as warfarin
- People who have been on long-term steroid tablet treatment (more than 7 consecutive days in a month)
- People who have taken part in another drug trial within the past month
- People who are unable to give or withdraw their consent to participate
