Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis):
- People aged 18 to 85 years who have been diagnosed with IPF by a specialist team, following current medical guidelines
- People with a mild to moderate level of breathlessness, rated 1 to 3 on the MRC breathlessness scale
- People whose condition has been considered clinically stable for at least 3 months before joining the trial, as assessed by the investigating doctor
For healthy comparison participants (Controls):
- People whose age (within 5 years) and sex match those of participants in the IPF group
Who may not be able to join:
For people with IPF:
- People whose breathing test results show a certain airflow pattern (FEV1/FVC ratio below 0.7) (confirm with trial site)
- People who have a cancer diagnosis that is currently being treated or actively monitored
- People who have had an infection or a worsening of their condition requiring a hospital stay in the last 3 months
- People who are currently smoking or using nicotine-containing vapes (within the last 3 months)
- People who are currently using portable or long-term supplemental oxygen
- People whose blood oxygen levels drop below 85% during a 6-minute walking test
- People who have any condition that would prevent them from completing cycling, breathing, or walking tests, as judged by the investigating doctor
- People who have taken part in a pulmonary rehabilitation program in the last 3 months
- People who have a medical condition that, under established guidelines, would make a supervised exercise test unsafe (confirm with trial site)
- Females of childbearing age who have a positive pregnancy test
- People with symptomatic peripheral vascular disease (a condition affecting blood flow in the limbs)
- People currently taking nitrate-based medicines or a type of medication known as phosphodiesterase V inhibitors (confirm with trial site for specific medicines)
For healthy comparison participants (Controls):
- People who are unable to provide written informed consent
- People with a cancer diagnosis (other than certain localised skin cancers) that is being actively investigated, treated, or monitored
- People with significant heart or lung disease, as judged by the investigating doctor
- People with diabetes that requires medication to manage
- People who are currently smoking or using nicotine-containing vapes (within the last 3 months)
- People with symptomatic peripheral vascular disease
- People currently taking nitrate-based medicines or a type of medication known as phosphodiesterase V inhibitors (confirm with trial site for specific medicines)
