Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with bladder cancer or colorectal (bowel) cancer
- You are scheduled to have surgery that will include the creation of a stoma (an opening made in the abdomen to allow waste — either stool or urine — to leave the body through a pouch)
- If you have bladder cancer, you must be having a specific type of urine stoma called an ileal conduit (where urine drains freely into a pouch rather than being controlled)
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You are able to read and understand English well enough to complete questionnaires
Family members or friends (caregivers) may also be able to join if:
- You are identified by the patient as someone who knows them well and is involved in helping care for them before and after surgery
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You are able to read and understand English well enough to complete questionnaires
- You are pregnant — the trial states this is still allowed, as this type of educational program is not expected to affect a pregnancy
Who may not be able to join:
- Patients under 18 years of age
- Patients with bladder cancer who are not having an ileal conduit type of urostomy (confirm with trial site)
- Anyone — patient or caregiver — who is unable to read and understand English
