Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 to 70 years old
- People who are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- People whose weight has been stable and who have not been doing regular exercise before enrolling
- People who do not use tobacco products, drink excessive amounts of alcohol, take dietary supplements, or take medications known to affect blood sugar or fat levels in the blood (with some exceptions for people in the Type 2 Diabetes group)
- People with no significant problems affecting major organs or serious conditions such as severe chronic kidney disease or cancer
- People who fit into one of the four specific groups below:
Lean group — People with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, normal liver fat levels (below 5%), normal fasting blood sugar (below 100 mg/dL), normal blood sugar after a sugar drink test (below 140 mg/dL), and a normal HbA1c blood test result (below 5.7%)
Metabolically normal obesity (MNO) group — People with a BMI between 30.0 and 44.9, normal liver fat levels (below 5%), normal fasting blood sugar (below 100 mg/dL), normal blood sugar after a sugar drink test (below 140 mg/dL), and a normal HbA1c result (below 5.7%)
Metabolically abnormal obesity with insulin resistance and fatty liver disease group — People with a BMI between 30.0 and 44.9, elevated liver fat levels (above 7.5%), mildly elevated fasting blood sugar (100–125 mg/dL), elevated blood sugar after a sugar drink test (140–199 mg/dL), and an HbA1c result in the pre-diabetes range (5.7%–6.3%)
Metabolically abnormal obesity with Type 2 Diabetes group — People with a BMI between 30.0 and 44.9 who have a clinical diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, or who have significantly elevated fasting blood sugar, or elevated blood sugar after a sugar drink test, or an HbA1c above 6.4% (confirm specific medication requirements with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who do not meet all of the inclusion criteria listed above
