Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with a specific type of throat/voice box cancer (squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx) that is at an advanced local stage and are being treated with both radiation therapy and chemotherapy together as your main treatment.
- You are 18 years of age or older.
- You are generally able to carry out daily activities with little to no limitation from your illness (confirm with trial site if unsure about your activity level).
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form and fill out questionnaires about side effects and quality of life (verbal answers recorded on the form are also acceptable).
- Your chemotherapy treatment includes at least one of these drugs: cisplatin, carboplatin, or cetuximab.
Who may not be able to join:
- You are already receiving any other treatment specifically aimed at reducing taste problems.
- Your cancer has spread to other parts of the body (metastatic disease).
- You have known allergies or sensitivities to the materials used in the mouth device used in this trial.
- You have previously received chemotherapy or radiation therapy for a head or neck cancer.
- You are unwilling or unable to use the mouth device involved in this trial.
- You are a current smoker or have smoked cigarettes within the 3 months before starting treatment.
- You are unable to complete the required forms (note: verbal responses recorded daily are acceptable).
- You have a serious uncontrolled illness, such as a severe ongoing infection requiring IV antibiotics for more than 30 days, heart failure, unstable chest pain, certain heart rhythm problems, a weakened immune system, significant liver disease, significant blood disorders, or a serious unstable mental health condition.
- You are currently taking certain specific medications that cannot be safely switched to an alternative during the study, including: acetazolamide, maribavir, eszopiclone, topiramate, captopril, lithium, procainamide, terbinafine, or amiodarone (confirm with trial site if you take any of these).
- You already have taste loss at the start of the study, as assessed at your first visit.
- You have tested positive for COVID-19 during the study period.
