Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are willing and able to sign and date a consent form agreeing to take part
- You are willing to follow all study procedures and be available for the full length of the study
- You are a male or female in good general health, between 18 and 55 years old
- You are able to read, write, and complete various questionnaires and self-assessments in English
- You have been diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) according to standard medical guidelines
- If you are currently drinking, you are willing to receive free inpatient (live-in) treatment for AUD for up to 30 days; if you have already been treated and have been sober for 3 or more months, inpatient treatment is not required
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a significant current medical condition affecting the brain, heart, hormones, thyroid, kidneys, or liver, or you have HIV, or you experience delirium or hallucinations; people with seizures not related to alcohol withdrawal are also excluded (confirm with trial site)
- You currently have a substance use disorder for any substance other than alcohol or tobacco
- You have any metal objects inside your body (such as a pacemaker) that would make an MRI scan unsafe
- You have claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or any other reason you cannot have an MRI scan
- You test positive for illegal drugs at your intake appointment or at any follow-up appointments
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, or you have a type of IUD (a contraceptive device) that would make an MRI scan unsafe
- You have recently taken certain medications that could affect the study results, such as disulfiram, naltrexone, acamprosate, or anti-seizure medications
- You are considered likely to experience serious alcohol withdrawal symptoms during the study
