  • People with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above, OR a BMI of 25 or above combined with at least one of the following health conditions: osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, risk factors for cardiovascular (heart) disease, or type 2 diabetes
  • People whose back pain has noticeably reduced their ability to carry out everyday physical activities, scoring 4 or more out of 24 on a standard back pain questionnaire (confirm with trial site)
  • People who rate their average back pain over the past week as 3 or more out of 10
  • People aged 18 years or older

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose back pain has a specific identified cause, such as a tumour or a bone fracture
  • People who have had back surgery within the past six months
  • People with a psychiatric condition that could make it difficult to take part in the trial
  • People who are currently pregnant, or who gave birth less than 9 months ago

Physical activity will be assessed by the activPAL as the average number of daily steps over a period of one week.; Physical functioning will be measured using the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ).
