Who might be able to join this trial:

For Veterans:

  • Adults aged 18 or older
  • People who have been assigned to a VA primary care provider
  • People who have a body weight record showing a BMI of 30 or higher in the VA medical record within the past 16 weeks before joining
  • People who have a second valid weight measurement recorded in the VA medical record within the past year
  • People who have a BMI of 30 or higher at the time of joining the trial
  • People who are able to attend virtual sessions during regular business hours

For Partners (of the Veteran participant):

  • Adults aged 18 or older
  • People who are able to attend virtual sessions during regular business hours
  • People who speak with the Veteran at least once a week
  • People who live in the same state where the Veteran receives their VA care

Who may not be able to join:

Veterans may not be eligible if they:

  • Are not fluent in English
  • Have severe hearing loss that would prevent participation
  • Have a diagnosis of dementia
  • Have taken part in a clinical or research-based weight management program in the past 3 months
  • Have had bariatric (weight-loss) surgery in the past 2 years, or are planning to have it within the next 6 months
  • Are currently pregnant, recently gave birth, are breastfeeding, or are planning to become pregnant within 6 months
  • Are currently receiving treatment for cancer (other than skin cancer)
  • Have current issues with drug or alcohol dependence that are not in remission, a recent suicide attempt, active psychosis, or an active behaviour flag in their medical record
  • Score 8 or higher on a standard alcohol use screening tool (AUDIT-C), indicating high levels of alcohol use
  • Are receiving hospice or palliative (end-of-life comfort) care
  • Are living in a nursing home or assisted living facility
  • Are enrolled in VA home-based primary care
  • Have end-stage kidney disease
  • Have a current or past diagnosis of anorexia or bulimia
  • Have had a hospital stay in the past 3 months
  • Weigh more than 440 pounds, as this is the maximum weight the study's scales can measure

Partners may not be eligible if they:

  • Are not fluent in English
  • Have severe hearing loss that would prevent participation
  • Have a health condition that may limit their ability to take part in the program (confirm with trial site)
  • Score 8 or higher on a standard alcohol use screening tool (AUDIT-C), indicating high levels of alcohol use
  • Are receiving hospice or palliative (end-of-life comfort) care
  • Are living in a nursing home or assisted living facility
