Who might be able to join this trial:
- People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 30 and 40 (or between 27.5 and 40 for people of Chinese or South Asian background), OR people with a BMI over 40 who are considered too high-risk for surgery or who do not wish to have surgery
- People who have already tried standard weight loss approaches — such as diet, exercise, behaviour changes, and weight loss medications — without sufficient success, either separately or in combination
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had surgery on the upper digestive system, such as weight loss surgery, anti-reflux surgery, stomach removal, or oesophageal surgery
- People diagnosed with gastroparesis (a condition where the stomach empties too slowly)
- People who currently smoke
- People who have used opioid pain medications at any point in the 12 months before enrolling
- People who have previously had certain surgical procedures on the valve between the stomach and small intestine (pyloromyotomy or pyloroplasty)
- People with a blockage anywhere in the digestive tract
- People currently taking medications that may affect weight loss or how quickly the stomach empties
- People with serious blood clotting problems
- People with varicose veins in the oesophagus or stomach, or related stomach lining changes caused by liver pressure
- People with an uncontrolled hormonal or glandular condition that is causing their weight gain, such as an underactive thyroid, Cushing's syndrome, or an eating disorder
- People with inflammatory conditions of the digestive tract, such as severe oesophagitis, active stomach or duodenal ulcers, or conditions like Crohn's disease
- People with a current or recent cancer diagnosis
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who are not considered medically safe to undergo general anaesthesia
- People rated as ASA Grade IV or V, meaning those with severe or life-threatening medical conditions (confirm with trial site)
- People with a mental health or psychiatric condition, or a current problem with drug or alcohol use
- People whom the examining doctor considers unsuitable for safe participation for any other reason
- People who do not wish to participate
