Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 70 years old (male or female)
- You have been diagnosed with a type of thyroid cancer called papillary thyroid carcinoma, and a needle biopsy has confirmed that cancer has spread to lymph nodes on the same side of the neck
- Your thyroid tumor is smaller than 3.0 cm (about 1.2 inches) at its widest point
- Scans (ultrasound and CT) show that the cancer has not grown outside the thyroid gland itself
Who may not be able to join:
- You have cancer spread to lymph nodes on the opposite side of the neck, or in the upper neck area (level I nodes)
- Any affected lymph node measures more than 2.0 cm (about 0.8 inches) across its shorter width
- There are signs that the cancer may have grown through the wall of the affected lymph nodes into surrounding tissue
- You have a deformity of the neck or chest area
- You have a serious condition affecting your liver, kidneys, heart, or other major organs, or your blood does not clot normally
- There is evidence that the cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, such as the lungs or bones
- You have had previous surgery or radiation treatment on your neck
- You are unable to safely receive general anesthesia
- You are unwilling to undergo either of the surgical procedures being studied in this trial
- You are not able or willing to attend long-term follow-up appointments after the trial
