Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with a type of mouth cancer called squamous cell carcinoma, confirmed through laboratory testing of tissue
- People who are scheduled to have surgery with the goal of curing their cancer
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who are able to understand the study and are willing to sign a written consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a known allergy to the medications metronidazole or chlorhexidine
- People who have severe liver or kidney disease, based on their medical history or test results
- People who are currently drinking alcohol and are unable to stop drinking for the 10-day antibiotic treatment period
- People whose oral cancer has come back after previously being treated with radiation therapy or a combination of chemotherapy and radiation
- People whose oral cancer cannot be removed with surgery
- People who are unable to use a mouth rinse, or unable to take metronidazole either by mouth or through a feeding tube
- People who are currently taking antibiotics, or who have taken antibiotics within the past 30 days
- People who are pregnant
