Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have sickle cell disease, of any type
- Children and young people between the ages of 4 and 21 years old with sickle cell disease
- People who are currently in hospital because of a sickle cell pain crisis that requires pain relief given through a drip or injection
- People whose enrolment into the study can begin within 12 hours of receiving their first dose of that injected or drip-based pain relief in the Emergency Department
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose current pain episode has already been going on for more than 3 days
- People who have been hospitalised more than 9 times in the past year
- People who are in hospital for a sickle cell complication other than a pain crisis, such as a problem with the spleen or liver, stroke, or a stroke-like episode
- People with a history of opioid use disorder, long-term (chronic) pain, or a daily medication routine that includes opioids
- People with severely low haemoglobin levels (a measure of red blood cells in the blood) below a certain threshold
- People who are pregnant (confirmed by a urine test) or currently breastfeeding
- People with certain elevated liver enzyme levels beyond what is considered normal for their age
- People with kidney function results above the acceptable level for their age group (confirm with trial site for the specific numbers)
- People who currently have acute chest syndrome, a serious infection in the blood, a bacterial infection, or are medically unstable
- People who are currently taking a medication called L-glutamine
- People who have previously had an allergic reaction to products containing L-citrulline
