Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are either 65 years of age or older (for the older adult group) or between 18 and 39 years old (for the younger adult group)
  • You are able to walk on your own without using a cane, walker, or any other assistive device
  • You have enough muscle strength in your main muscle groups, as checked by a simple physical assessment
  • You have been cleared by a doctor to take part in an exercise program
  • You are able to attend all required visits, keep your usual level of physical activity the same during the study, and do not plan to move away before the study ends

Who may not be able to join:

  • You regularly use a cane, walker, wheelchair, or any other device to help you move around
  • You have a pacemaker, metal implants, or any other implanted medical device that could be affected by a type of electrical muscle stimulation used in this study
  • You are currently pregnant
  • You have an unstable ongoing or long-term illness, such as kidney failure, uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, or certain other serious conditions
  • You are receiving end-of-life or hospice care for a terminal illness
  • You have used any medications known to affect muscle size or strength (such as anabolic steroids or growth hormone) in the past 6 months
  • You have a known nerve or muscle condition that affects how you move or feel, such as Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, a history of stroke, or similar conditions
  • You have had a bone, joint, or muscle injury or surgery in the past year that could affect your ability to exercise, such as a knee or hip replacement (confirm with trial site for specific surgeries)
  • You have any other health condition that a study doctor feels could interfere with the study or its results
