Who might be able to join this trial:
- People between the ages of 25 and 64
- People who are right-handed
- Veterans who were deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation New Dawn (OND), or other post-9/11 war on terrorism operations
- People with a history of PTSD and/or depression
- People who experienced a mild traumatic brain injury (such as a concussion) related to their military service
- People who take psychiatric or mood-related medications, provided the dose has been stable for at least 3 months
- People who take stimulant medications, provided they have not taken a dose within the 12 hours before participating
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a history of neurological (brain or nerve), cardiovascular (heart or blood vessel), or pulmonary (lung) disease
- People with any type of irregular heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmia)
- People currently experiencing active thoughts of suicide
- People with visible wounds or broken skin on the left ear
- People who have medical implants such as a heart defibrillator, pacemaker, or deep brain stimulator
- People who are pregnant
- People who have undergone a specific nerve stimulation treatment called taVNS within the past 4 weeks
- People currently living with a substance use disorder, with the exception that mild cannabis use disorder may still be permitted (confirm with trial site)
- People currently living with moderate or severe alcohol use disorder
- People with a major cognitive disorder affecting memory or thinking
