Who might be able to join this trial:

  • A parent or guardian must sign and date a consent form on behalf of their child
  • The child must be willing to follow all study procedures and be available for the full length of the study
  • Children of any gender aged 6 to 17 years old
  • Children who have never taken stimulant medication, or who are willing to stop taking stimulant medication for about 3 days before the testing sessions
  • For the ADHD group: children who have been diagnosed with ADHD based on a structured interview and who score high enough on an ADHD rating scale for their age and gender
  • For the control group: children with no diagnosable condition based on a structured interview, and who score within the typical range on the ADHD rating scale for their age and gender

Who may not be able to join:

  • Children currently taking psychiatric medications that cannot be stopped for approximately 3 days before testing
  • Children with a current seizure disorder (a past history of fever-related seizures is allowed)
  • Children who have certain medical devices implanted, such as a cardiac pacemaker, that could interfere with the monitoring equipment used in the study
  • Children whose IQ is estimated by a clinician to be below 70
  • Children who currently meet the full diagnostic criteria for PTSD, generalised anxiety disorder, major depression, or who have ever been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, or a psychotic disorder (children with milder anxiety or low mood symptoms that do not meet the full criteria for a disorder may still be considered)
  • Children who are deaf or hard of hearing, as the study involves responding to sound-based tasks
  • Children who are unable to complete the study assessments for any reason
  • Children excluded for any other reason at the discretion of the principal investigator
