Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are a family member or close relative of a patient who is dying in the emergency department, where the patient is not expected to live more than 72 hours and has a do-not-resuscitate or treatment withdrawal order in place
- If several relatives are present, the trial site will prioritise offering participation in this order: the patient's designated trusted person, the relative most involved in the patient's care, the partner, a parent or child, another family member
- People aged 18 or older
- People who agree to take part in follow-up phone interviews at 3 months and 6 months after the experience
- People who give their informed verbal consent to participate
- People who have French health insurance (excluding AME, a specific type of state medical assistance)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who do not understand, read, or speak French
- Relatives of patients who are organ donors, as those families receive dedicated support from transplant coordination teams
- People who would not be able to complete the follow-up interviews
- People who are already taking part in another intervention trial
- People who are under a legal guardianship or court-appointed protection arrangement
- People who have had their freedom restricted by a court or government decision
- People who are physically unable to give their verbal consent
