Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with sickle cell disease:

  • You are older than 15 years and 6 months, OR between 3 years old and 15 years and 6 months old
  • You have been diagnosed with a specific type of sickle cell disease (known as SS or Sβ0 type)

For people joining as a comparison/control group (without sickle cell disease):

  • You are older than 15 years and 6 months, OR between 3 years old and 15 years and 6 months old
  • You do not have any blood hemoglobin disorder
  • You are being seen by a doctor for one of the following reasons (adults): investigation of a blood condition, prolonged fever or inflammation, an auto-inflammatory or systemic disease, or general decline in health
  • You are being seen by a doctor for one of the following reasons (children): suspected early puberty, growth delay, or a neurodevelopmental concern
  • A blood test is already planned as part of your normal medical care

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have a blood hemoglobin disorder other than sickle cell disease
  • You have had a blood transfusion in the last 3 months
  • You have an ongoing chronic viral infection such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV
  • You currently have an active infection or a known inflammatory condition
  • You have a known thyroid problem (overactive or underactive thyroid), or you take a thyroid medication called levothyroxine
  • You have an active cancer diagnosis, or your cancer has been in remission for less than 5 years
  • You are currently taking oral steroid medication (such as cortisone or prednisone)
  • You are already taking part in another interventional medical research study
  • You (if an adult) or your parent/guardian (if you are a child) do not agree to participate in the research
  • You are not enrolled in a social security or health insurance system (confirm with trial site)
