Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease at stage 3, 4, or 5
- People who are physically able to do exercise
- People who live within 20 miles of the Wake Forest Reynolda Campus
- People who speak and understand English fluently
- People who do not plan to travel away from their home area for a long period during the study
- People who are willing to be placed into either of the two study groups by chance (randomization)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are currently receiving kidney replacement treatments such as hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, or who are expected to need such treatment within the next 6 months
- People who rely on a wheelchair to get around
- People who are currently following a resistance (strength) training exercise program
- People who have had a joint replacement or bone/joint surgery in the past 6 months, or who are planning to have such surgery in the next 6 months
- People with certain serious heart or circulation conditions, including: a heart attack in the past 6 months, unstable chest pain, uncontrolled dangerous heart rhythms, active infection of the heart, severe narrowing of the heart's main valve with symptoms, severe heart failure, a recent blood clot in the lungs or legs, or a recent tear in the main blood vessel (confirm with trial site for full details)
- People diagnosed with Parkinson's disease
- People with a lung condition that requires them to use supplemental oxygen
- People currently receiving treatment for cancer
- People currently receiving physical therapy or heart/lung rehabilitation
- People with Type 1 diabetes, or Type 2 diabetes that is managed with insulin
- People who score below a certain level on a telephone-based memory and thinking assessment called the TICS (Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status)
- People whom the trial's medical team considers unsuitable for participation based on their overall health, appropriateness for the study, or concerns about their ability to follow the program
