Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You must live in Manitoba
  • You must be between 6 and 24 years old
  • You must have been diagnosed with major depression, an anxiety disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • You must have taken or currently be taking an antidepressant medication from the SSRI family (such as Prozac, Zoloft, Cipralex, Celexa, Luvox, or Paxil)
  • [For the "Cases" group only] You must have experienced behavioural side effects while taking an SSRI, which got better after the dose was lowered or the medication was stopped
  • [For the "Controls" group only] You must have taken an SSRI for at least 8 weeks in a row without experiencing any side effects

Who may not be able to join:

  • A parent, legal guardian, or mature minor who is unable to give formal written consent for participation
  • Children aged 6 to 13 who are unable to give their own agreement (assent) to take part
  • Anyone unwilling to provide a saliva sample for genetic testing
  • Anyone who has been diagnosed with, or is suspected of having, ADHD (combined or hyperactive type), oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, bipolar disorder, a psychotic disorder, or a pervasive developmental disorder (such as autism spectrum disorder)
  • Anyone who has had a liver transplant or a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant at any point in their life
